1. Park both vehicles so that their batteries are close to each other.
2. Turn off both engines.
3. Attach one end of the red jumper cable to the positive (+) terminal on the dead battery of the Volvo.
4. Attach the other end of the red jumper cable to the positive (+) terminal on the good battery of the other vehicle.
5. Attach one end of the black jumper cable to the negative (-) terminal on the good battery of the other vehicle.
6. Attach the other end of the black jumper cable to an unpainted metal surface on the engine of the Volvo.
7. Start the engine of the other vehicle and let it run for a few minutes to charge the dead battery in the Volvo.
8. Once the Volvo's battery has had time to charge, start the Volvo.
9. Keep the Volvo running for at least 15 minutes to allow the alternator to recharge the battery.
10. Disconnect the jumper cables in the reverse order that they were connected.
Note: If the Volvo's battery is completely dead, it may take several minutes for it to charge enough to start the vehicle. Be patient and do not attempt to start the Volvo repeatedly, as this could damage the starter.
