5. Clean the starter contacts with a wire brush.
6. Replace the starter in reverse order of above.
1.9-Liter and 2.5-Liter Engines
1. Loosen the three-lower bell housing bolts about three full turns.
2. Remove the three rear bell-housing bolts.
3. Remove the battery cable from the starter solenoid. This is a 10mm bolt. Then remove the small wire from the solenoid.
4. Unbolt and remove the plastic dust cover (it’s bolted by two 10mm bolts) located on the right-front end of the engine in front of the water pump. This gives access to the upper transmission bell-housing bolt and the starter through the front of the right wheel arch.
5. Remove the one long bolt that’s near the upper driver’s-side motor mount to access the top rear bell housing bolt.
6. Remove the last top starter bolt through the front of the wheel well.
7. Remove the starter bracket by removing the nut that holds it to the engine block under the exhaust manifold.
8. Remove the three top bell-housing bolts. Now you can remove the starter from the car.
9. Remove the positive and negative battery cables.
10. Remove the starter motor wires at the starter.
11. Clean the starter contact surfaces.
12. Install the starter motor in the reverse order of removal.
