What happens to the state registration if you voluntary repo a vehicle?

When a car is voluntarily repossessed, it is surrendered by the owner to the lender in order to settle the debt. The lender then takes ownership of the car and generally sells it to recoup their losses. Once a vehicle is repossessed, the state registration is effectively canceled, and the car cannot be legally driven. The new owner will then need to register the car with the state before it can be used.
