North Carolina General Statutes § 20-138 (b)(1) state that it is unlawful for a person traveling upon any highway or roadway in North Carolina to ride in the truck bed or on any other part of a vehicle not designed or intended for the carrying of passengers, commonly referred to as “riding in the open bed of a truck.”
Therefore, it is generally illegal to ride in the back of a pickup truck on highways in North Carolina.
