2. Remove the distributor cap. This is the round cap on the front of the engine that covers the ignition points.
3. Find the timing marks. There will be two marks on the crankshaft pulley, one for Top Dead Center (TDC) and one for 12 degrees Before Top Dead Center (12° BTDC). The TDC mark will be directly in line with the pointer on the timing cover.
4. Insert a timing light into the #1 spark plug wire. This will allow you to see the timing marks when the engine is running.
5. Connect the negative battery cable to the battery.
6. Start the engine.
7. Let it idle until it reaches operating temperature.
8. Aim the timing light at the timing marks.
9. Turn the distributor housing until the 12° BTDC timing mark is aligned with the pointer on the timing cover.
10. Tighten the distributor hold-down bolt to secure the distributor in place.
11. Replace the distributor cap and spark plug wires.
12. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
