- Replacement spark plugs (NGK BPR5ES-11 or equivalent)
- Spark plug wrench
- Gapping tool (if necessary)
- Rags
- Compressed air (optional)
Instructions:
1. Turn off the engine and allow it to cool down. Be sure the engine is cool before removing any spark plugs. This is important for safety reasons, and it will also make the job easier.
2. Remove the wire or wires from the spark plug. To remove the spark plug wires, use a spark plug wire puller or pliers. Be careful not to damage the wires. Grasp the spark plug wire boot and gently twist and pull it off the spark plug.
3. Use a spark plug wrench to loosen and remove the old spark plugs. Be sure to use the correct size wrench for your spark plugs. Once you've loosened the plug, use your fingers to unscrew it and remove it from the engine.
4. Inspect the old spark plugs. Look for signs of wear or damage, such as:
- Excessive electrode erosion
- Fouling
- Glazing
- Carbon deposits
5. Gap the new spark plugs, if necessary. Some spark plugs come pre-gapped, but it's always a good idea to double-check the gap before installing them. Use a gapping tool to set the gap to the specified measurement for your engine. To gap a spark plug, insert the feeler gauge between the center electrode and the ground electrode and bend the outer electrode until the gauge fits snugly.
6. Screw the new spark plugs into place by hand. Tighten the spark plugs until they are snug, but do not overtighten them. Use a spark plug wrench to tighten the spark plugs until they are snug. Do not overtighten the spark plugs, as this can damage the threads in the cylinder head.
7. Reattach the spark plug wires. Make sure that the wires are properly seated on the spark plugs.
8. Start the engine and check for any leaks. If there are any leaks, tighten the spark plugs until the leaks stop. Let the engine run for a few minutes and listen for any unusual noises. If you hear any unusual noises, turn off the engine and investigate the source of the noise.
