2. Check the oil level. Locate the oil dipstick and pull it out. Wipe it clean and then reinsert it. Pull it out again and check the oil level. If the oil level is above the "full" line on the dipstick, you will need to remove the excess oil.
3. Drain excess oil. There are two ways to remove excess oil from your engine:
* You can use a drain plug wrench to remove the oil drain plug. The oil drain plug is typically located on the bottom of the oil pan. Place a drain pan under the drain plug and then remove it. Allow all of the oil to drain out.
* You can also use an oil extractor pump to remove the excess oil. Oil extractor pumps are available at most auto parts stores. To use an oil extractor pump, simply insert the tube of the pump into the oil dipstick tube and then pump the oil out of the engine.
4. Replace the oil filter. Once you have removed the excess oil, you will need to replace the oil filter. The oil filter is located near the top of the engine, typically near the valve cover.
> * Unscrew the old oil filter and install a new one.
> * Tighten the oil filter until it is snug.
> * Do not overtighten the oil filter as this could damage the oil filter gasket.
5. Add new oil. Once you have replaced the oil filter, you will need to add new oil to the engine.
> * Use a funnel to add oil to the engine.
> * Slowly add the oil until the oil level is at the "full" line on the dipstick.
> * Check the oil level several times as you are adding oil to ensure that you do not overfill the engine again.
6. Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes. This will allow the new oil to circulate throughout the engine.
7. Check for leaks. Make sure there are no oil leaks around the oil filter or the oil drain plug. If you see any leaks, tighten the oil filter or the oil drain plug until the leak stops.
8. Take your car for a short drive. This will help to distribute the new oil throughout the engine.
