1. Disconnect the spark plug wires from the spark plugs.
2. Remove the distributor cap.
3. Locate the timing mark on the harmonic balancer. It is usually a small notch or line.
4. Rotate the crankshaft until the timing mark aligns with the pointer on the timing cover.
5. Loosen the distributor hold-down bolt or clamp with the wrench.
6. Turn the distributor until the spark plug wire for cylinder number one is pointing towards the number one spark plug on the distributor cap.
7. Retighten the distributor hold-down bolt.
8. Reconnect the spark plug wires to the spark plugs.
9. Start the engine and check the timing with a timing light. The timing should be set to 0 degrees before top dead center (BTDC).
*If the timing is not correct, loosen the distributor hold-down bolt and turn the distributor until the timing is correct.*
