Procedure:
1. Ensure the vehicle is in a safe and stable position (parked, parking brake engaged, etc.) and that the engine is off and has had sufficient time to cool down.
2. Locate the power steering pump. In the 1998 Toyota Corolla CE, it is typically mounted on the front of the engine, near the top.
3. Use the 19 mm wrench to loosen and remove the belt tensioner bolt.
4. Use the flat head screwdriver to remove the serpentine belt from the pulley on the power steering pump.
5. Remove the 3 bolts (12mm) that secure the power steering pump
6. The pump is now loose, but before you can completely remove it, you need to disconnect the power steering lines.
* Place an oil drain pan under the pump to catch any remaining fluid.
*Use the open-end wrench to loosen and remove the high pressure hose (17mm) from the pump.
*Use the open-end wrench to loosen and remove the return hose (14mm) from the pump.
7. Remove the old power steering pump.
8. Before installing the new power steering pump, make sure to clean the mating surface on the engine block.
9. Install the new power steering pump and secure it with the bolts you removed in step 5.
10. Reconnect the power steering lines.
11. Reinstall the serpentine belt.
12. Tighten the belt tensioner bolt.
13. Add new power steering fluid to the reservoir.
14. Check for any leaks.
15. Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes. Check the power steering fluid level and add more if necessary.
16. Test the power steering system by turning the steering wheel from left to right. Make sure the steering is smooth and there are no leaks.
Tips:
- It may be helpful to have a second person assist you with some of the steps, such as holding the serpentine belt while you loosen and tighten the tensioner bolt.
- Be careful not to overtighten the bolts, as this could damage the pump or engine block.
- If you are not comfortable performing this repair yourself, you can take your vehicle to a qualified mechanic.
