1. Park the car on level ground and turn off the engine.
2. Open the hood and locate the transmission fluid dipstick. It is typically marked with a yellow or red handle and is located near the back of the engine compartment, on the driver's side.
3. Pull the dipstick out of the transmission and wipe it clean with a clean cloth.
4. Insert the dipstick back into the transmission until it is fully seated.
5. Pull the dipstick out again and check the fluid level. The fluid should be between the "Full" and "Add" marks on the dipstick.
6. If the fluid level is low, add enough transmission fluid to bring it up to the correct level. Use only the type of transmission fluid recommended by the vehicle manufacturer.
7. Reinsert the dipstick and ensure it is fully seated.
8. Close the hood and start the engine.
9. Let the engine run for a few minutes, then shift through all of the gears, pausing for a few seconds in each gear.
10. Check the transmission fluid level again. It should still be between the "Full" and "Add" marks on the dipstick.
