Materials Needed:
1. Aftermarket boost gauge with necessary accessories
2. Boost gauge installation kit
3. Zip ties or mounting brackets
4. T-fitting or boost tap
5. Vacuum line
6. Electrical wire (for power and ground connection)
7. Wire connectors (crimp-on or solder type)
8. Tools (screwdriver, pliers, cutters, wrench, voltmeter, etc.)
Step 1: Prepare the Boost Gauge Installation:
1. Gather the required materials and make sure you have the correct installation kit for your boost gauge.
Step 2: Engine Access:
1. Open your MR2's hood to access the engine compartment.
Step 3: Locate the Intake Manifold:
1. Identify the intake manifold in your engine compartment. It's usually made of metal or plastic and connected to the throttle body and air intake.
Step 4: Install the T-Fitting (or Boost Tap):
1. To connect your boost gauge, you'll need to install a T-fitting between the intake manifold and one of the vacuum lines.
2. Disconnect a vacuum line from the intake manifold that's related to the MAP sensor or an appropriate vacuum source.
3. Connect your T-fitting or boost tap to the disconnected vacuum line.
4. Reconnect the original vacuum line to the T-fitting or boost tap.
Step 5: Run the Vacuum Line:
1. Connect one end of the vacuum line provided with your boost gauge kit to the T-fitting or boost tap you just installed.
2. Route the vacuum line through a convenient path towards your dashboard.
Step 6: Install the Boost Gauge:
1. Choose a suitable location for the boost gauge on your dashboard or center console.
2. Use the provided mounting brackets or zip ties to securely mount the boost gauge in place.
Step 7: Wiring Connections:
1. Identify the power and ground wires coming out of your boost gauge.
2. Connect the power wire to a constant 12V source. This could be achieved by tapping into an ignition wire or by connecting to the fuse box.
3. Connect the ground wire to a suitable ground point on the chassis.
Step 8: Connect to Vacuum Line:
1. Connect the other end of the vacuum line that you routed from the T-fitting to the vacuum fitting on the boost gauge.
Step 9: Test the Gauge:
1. Start your MR2's engine and check if the boost gauge is showing the correct readings as you accelerate and decelerate.
Step 10: Secure and Tidy Up:
1. Secure all wires and vacuum lines using zip ties or electrical tape.
2. Double-check all connections and make sure everything is properly secured.
Step 11: Finalize the Installation:
1. Turn off your engine and clean up the installation area if needed.
Note: Disconnect your battery or disable the ignition while performing electrical connections. Consult your vehicle's specific wiring diagrams or documentation if necessary.
Once the installation is complete, you can enjoy monitoring the boost levels and performance of your 1991 Toyota MR2 Turbo with your newly installed aftermarket boost gauge.
