How do you change the transmission fluid on a 2001 Nissan Frontier?

Tools and materials needed:

- New transmission fluid (check your owner's manual for the correct type and amount)

- A new transmission filter (if equipped)

- A transmission fluid pan gasket (if equipped)

- A funnel

- A 3/8-inch ratchet and socket set

- A drain pan

- A pair of safety glasses

- A shop rag

Instructions:

1. Park the vehicle on a level surface.

- Be sure to put the truck in _park_ mode.

2. Turn of the engine.

- Always wait for the engine to cool down to avoid burns.

3. Locate the transmission fluid drain plug.

- The drain plug is typically located on the bottom of the transmission pan.

4. Place the drain pan under the drain plug.

- Be sure the drain pan is large enough to catch all of the fluid that will drain out.

5. Loosen the drain plug.

- Use the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket to loosen the drain plug.

6. Allow the transmission fluid to drain completely.

- This may take several minutes.

7. Replace the drain plug.

- Once all of the fluid has drained out, replace the drain plug.

8. Locate the transmission fluid fill plug.

- The fill plug is typically located on the side of the transmission.

9. Remove the fill plug.

- Use the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket to remove the fill plug.

10. Insert the funnel into the fill hole.

- Be sure to insert the funnel all the way into the hole.

11. Pour the new transmission fluid into the funnel.

- Add the amount of fluid specified in your owner's manual.

12. Replace the fill plug.

- Once you have added the correct amount of fluid, replace the fill plug.

13. Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes.

- This will circulate the new fluid throughout the transmission.

14. Check the transmission fluid level.

- Use the dipstick to check the transmission fluid level. The fluid should be between the "full" and "add" marks on the dipstick.

Tips:

- If your transmission is equipped with a transmission fluid filter, you should also replace it when you change the fluid.

- If your transmission pan is equipped with a gasket, you should also replace it when you change the fluid.

- Be sure to recycle the old transmission fluid.

- If you are uncomfortable performing this task, you can take your vehicle to a qualified mechanic to have the transmission fluid changed.
