How to change automatic transmission fluid of a Toyota Camry 2002?

Tools and Materials Needed:

- New Toyota Genuine Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) WS (check owner's manual for specific type and quantity)

- Oil drain pan

- Funnel

- Wrench

- Rags

- Safety glasses

Step-by-Step Guide:

1. Safety First:

- Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface, and the engine is off and completely cooled down.

- Engage the parking brake and chock the wheels to prevent the vehicle from rolling.

- Put on your safety glasses.

2. Locate the Drain Plug:

- Crawl under the vehicle and locate the transmission drain plug.

- It's usually a 17mm or 19mm bolt at the bottom of the transmission pan.

3. Place the Drain Pan:

- Position the oil drain pan directly under the transmission drain plug.

4. Remove the Drain Plug:

- Use the wrench to loosen and remove the transmission drain plug.

- Be careful as the ATF may be hot.

5. Drain the Old ATF:

- Allow all the old ATF to drain completely into the pan.

- This may take a few minutes.

6. Replace the Drain Plug:

- Once the draining is complete, replace the drain plug and tighten it securely.

7. Locate the Transmission Fill Plug:

- Find the transmission fill plug, which is typically located on the side of the transmission near the top.

- It's usually a 17mm or 19mm bolt.

8. Add New ATF:

- Use a funnel to add the recommended amount of new Toyota Genuine ATF WS to the transmission.

- Refer to your owner's manual for the exact quantity.

9. Check the Fluid Level:

- Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes.

- Shift through all gear positions (P, R, N, D, etc.) and back to P.

- Turn off the engine and wait a few minutes to allow the fluid to settle.

- Check the transmission fluid level using the dipstick, if your car has one. Ensure the fluid level is between the "FULL" and "ADD" marks on the dipstick.

10. Test Drive:

- Take the vehicle for a short test drive.

- Pay attention to any changes in transmission performance or any warning lights on the dashboard.

11. Periodic Checks:

- Periodically check the transmission fluid level and condition, as recommended in your owner's manual.

- Maintain the ATF according to the manufacturer's recommended intervals to ensure optimal transmission performance.

Note:

If you're not comfortable performing this task, it's best to have the automatic transmission fluid changed by a qualified mechanic or a reputable auto service center.
