1. Gather your tools. You will need a wrench, a ratchet, and a socket set.
2. Prepare the truck. Park the truck on a level surface and turn off the engine. Allow the engine to cool down completely.
3. Locate the fan clutch. The fan clutch is located on the front of the engine, behind the fan.
4. Loosen the collar nut. Use the wrench to loosen the collar nut that holds the fan clutch in place. Turn the nut counterclockwise until it is loose.
5. Remove the fan clutch. Once the collar nut is loose, you can remove the fan clutch by pulling it straight off of the water pump shaft.
6. Install the new fan clutch. If you are replacing the fan clutch, reverse the steps to install the new one. Tighten the collar nut until it is snug.
Note: The fan clutch on a 1996 Chevy truck is a reverse thread, which means that you turn it counterclockwise to loosen it and clockwise to tighten it.
