How do you change fuel pump 2003 Chevy Express van?

Tools and Materials Needed:

- Replacement Fuel Pump

- Fuel Filter (optional)

- Fuel line Disconnect Tool

- Screwdriver

- Wrench Set

- Safety glasses

- Gloves

- Jack

- Jack stands

- Container for fuel

Step-by-Step Guide:

1. Disconnect Battery Cable

- Ensure the engine is off, cool, and the parking brake properly set.

- Open the hood and locate the negative battery terminal (usually marked with a minus (-) symbol).

- Loosen the nut that secures the battery cable to the terminal using a wrench.

- Remove the battery cable and ensure not to let it come in contact with the positive terminal to prevent accidental sparks.

2. Access Fuel Tank

- The fuel tank is usually located under the vehicle. Place a jack and jack stands under the vehicle to raise the body.

- Make sure the vehicle is stable and secure.

- Locate the fuel tank and check the owner’s manual for its exact location.

- You may also find additional access panels to make it easier to remove.

3. Disconnect Fuel Lines

- Underneath the vehicle or the designated access panel inside, you will find fuel lines connected to the fuel pump module.

- Place a fuel container underneath to catch any fuel spillage.

- Use the fuel line disconnect tool or a screwdriver and pliers to loosen the clamps and carefully detach the fuel lines.

4. Remove Fuel Pump Module

- Locate the retaining ring or bolts holding the fuel pump module in place. Use a screwdriver or a wrench to remove the ring and/or bolts.

- Carefully lift the fuel pump module out of the tank while ensuring the float arm remains in the tank. Be cautious of any remaining fuel that might spill.

5. Replace the Fuel Pump

- Before installing the new fuel pump, compare it to the old one to ensure they are identical.

- If replacing the fuel filter, attach the new filter to the fuel pump before installing it.

- Insert the new fuel pump module into the tank, making sure the rubber gasket seals properly against the tank.

- Replace the retaining ring or bolts and tighten securely.

6. Reconnect Fuel Lines

- Reattach the fuel lines to the fuel pump module and ensure they are properly secured with the clamps.

7. Reconnect Battery Cable

- Locate the negative battery cable and reconnect it to the terminal. Tighten the nut to secure the cable.

8. Confirm Proper Functioning

- Start the engine and check for any fuel leaks around the fuel pump module and fuel lines.

9. Lower Vehicle

- Slowly lower the vehicle using the jack.

10. Test Drive

- Take the vehicle for a test drive to ensure it is running smoothly.

Note: If you are not comfortable working on your vehicle or if there is significant fuel spillage, it is recommended to seek assistance from a professional mechanic.
