1. Disconnect the Battery: Before starting any electrical work, disconnect the negative terminal of the vehicle's battery to prevent accidental power surges.
2. Remove the Airbag Module:
- Locate the two Torx screws on the backside of the steering wheel.
- Remove these screws using a suitable Torx screwdriver.
- Gently pry the airbag module out of its housing, taking care not to damage any wires or connectors.
- Disconnect the airbag connector by pressing the locking tab and pulling the connector apart.
- Set the airbag module aside in a safe place.
3. Remove the Steering Wheel Cover:
- Locate the two screws located at the 3 and 9 o'clock positions on the back of the steering wheel.
- Remove these screws using a Phillips head screwdriver.
- Gently pull the steering wheel cover straight out towards you to remove it.
4. Access the Horn Contacts:
- With the steering wheel cover removed, you will see the horn contacts located behind it.
- The horn contacts are typically made up of a metal ring and a spring-loaded contact point.
5. Test the Horn Contacts:
- Use a multimeter to test the continuity of the horn contacts.
- The horn contacts should show continuity when the horn button is pressed.
- If the horn contacts are not working properly, you may need to clean or replace them.
6. Reassemble:
- Once you have repaired or replaced the horn contacts, reassemble the steering wheel cover and airbag module in the reverse order of disassembly.
7. Reconnect the Battery:
- Reconnect the negative terminal of the battery to restore power to the vehicle.
Now that the steering wheel cover is off, you can easily access the horn assembly to diagnose or fix any issues with the horn.
