1. Park both cars close together, but not touching. Turn off the engines of both cars.
2. Open the hoods of both cars.
3. Locate the positive (+) and negative (-) terminals on both batteries. The positive terminal is usually marked with a "+" symbol or red coloring, while the negative terminal is usually marked with a "-" symbol or black coloring.
4. Connect the positive (+) cable to the positive (+) terminal of the flat battery.
5. Connect the negative (-) cable to an unpainted metal surface on the car with the dead battery, such as the engine block. Do not connect the negative (-) cable to the negative (-) terminal of the flat battery.
6. Start the car with the good battery and let it run for a few minutes.
7. Attempt to start the car with the flat battery.
8. Once the car with the flat battery is started, remove the cables in the reverse order that you put them on.
9. Allow both cars to run for a few minutes to recharge the flat battery.
Here are some additional tips for jump-starting a car:
* Make sure the cables you are using are rated for the amperage of your car's battery.
* Do not let the cables touch each other or any other metal surface while they are connected to the batteries.
* If the car with the flat battery does not start after a few attempts, stop trying and have the battery tested.
* If you are jump-starting a car in cold weather, be sure to warm up the good battery by running the car for a few minutes before connecting the cables.
