R 302 is a blend of two refrigerants, R 22 (chlorodifluoromethane) and R 115 (chloropentafluoroethane). R 22, which made up around 52% of the blend, has an ODP of 0.055, while R 115, comprising the remaining 48%, has an ODP of 0.6. Both R 22 and R 115 are potent greenhouse gases with high GWPs.
As a result of its environmental impact, the use of R 302 has been largely discontinued. More environmentally friendly alternatives, such as hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) and hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), with lower ODP and GWP values, have been developed and adopted in refrigeration and air conditioning systems.
Despite being phased out, there may still be some older systems that use R 302 refrigerant. In such cases, it is essential to follow guidelines and regulations regarding the safe handling, recovery, and disposal of R 302 and to transition to more environmentally sustainable alternatives.
