Age: You must be at least 16 years old to operate a moped.
License: You must have a valid Kentucky driver's license or a valid moped operator's permit. To obtain a moped operator's permit, you must pass a written test and a vision test.
Safety Equipment: You must wear a DOT-approved helmet while operating a moped.
Registration and Insurance: Your moped must be registered with the Kentucky Department of Transportation and have valid liability insurance.
Operating Restrictions: Mopeds may only be operated on public roads with a speed limit of 35 mph or less. They may not be operated on highways, interstates, or divided highways.
Additional Requirements: Mopeds must have a working headlight, taillight, brake light, horn, and turn signals. They must also be equipped with a rearview mirror and a muffler.
Penalties for Violations: Violating any of the above requirements may result in fines, penalties, and/or the suspension or revocation of your driver's license or moped operator's permit.
