1. Park your Passat in a safe location and turn off the engine.
2. Open the hood of your Passat.
3. Locate the battery. The battery is located in the engine bay, on the passenger's side. It is a black plastic box with two terminals, one positive and one negative.
4. Disconnect the negative terminal. Locate the negative terminal. You can identify the correct cable because there will be a negative battery symbol beside it. Use the wrench to loosen and remove the nut or bolt holding the negative battery cable to the battery terminal. Remove the negative battery cable from the battery terminal and set it aside.
5. Disconnect the positive terminal. Follow the same procedure as when you disconnected the negative terminal, but this time, locate and remove the positive battery terminal. The positive terminal will be marked with a positive battery symbol.
6. Remove the battery hold-down clamp. The battery hold-down clamp is a metal bracket that holds the battery in place. Use the wrench to loosen and remove the bolts that hold the battery hold-down clamp in place.
7. Lift the battery out of the engine bay. Be careful not to drop the battery.
8. Clean the battery terminals. Remove any corrosion or dirt from the battery terminals, and use a wire brush to clean the contact points on the battery. Applying a mixture of baking soda and water will help to clean off the terminals.
9. Install the new battery. Place the new battery in the engine bay, and make sure that the positive and negative terminals are facing the correct direction.
10. Reconnect the positive terminal. Place the positive battery cable onto the positive battery terminal. Replace the nut or bolt that holds the battery cable in place, then tighten it.
11. Reconnect the negative terminal. Do not get the positive and negative terminals mixed up or your battery could be damaged. Place the negative battery cable onto the negative terminal, and replace the nut or bolt that holds the cable in place, then tighten it.
12. Secure the battery hold-down clamp. Replace the battery hold-down clamp and tighten the bolts.
13. Close the hood of your Passat.
