The oil drain hose on a 2003 Harley-Davidson Sportster is found on the front/left side of the bike, above the primary cover. It is a relatively flexible black rubber hose that runs from the oil tank, down the bike, and ends at the drain plug. The drain plug is located on the left, lower front side of the bike, just below the primary cover.
Disconnect The Hose
To remove the oil drain hose, place a small drain pan or container under the drain plug to catch the escaping oil. Use a 1/2-inch wrench or socket to loosen the drain plug and allow the oil to drain from the engine. Once the oil has been drained, you can disconnect the oil drain hose by removing the hose clamp connecting the hose to the oil tank.
Replace The Oil Drain Hose
Inspect the hose
Inspect the hose for signs of damage, such as cracks or holes. If the hose is damaged, it will need to be replaced.
Remove the old hose
Using an adjustable wrench, loosen the hose clamp that secures the drain hose to the oil tank. Once the hose clamp is loose, slide the hose off the tank.
Install the new hose
Slide the new hose onto the oil tank. Secure the hose clamp and tighten it until it is snug.
Reconnect the oil lines
Reconnect the oil lines to the drain plug and the oil tank. Tighten the oil line connections until they are secure.
Add oil to the bike and check for leaks.
Start the bike and let it run for a few minutes. Check for leaks. If there are no leaks, the oil change is complete.
Additional Information
• Be sure to use new crush washers when installing the drain plug and oil filter. Crush washers help create a seal and prevent leaks.
• Tighten the drain plug and oil filter snugly, but do not over-tighten as this could damage the threads.
