The 1996 Mustang GT came with a
DOHC (Double Overhead Camshaft) engine. This engine was the 4.6L V8, also known as the "Modular" engine.
While some Mustangs had SOHC engines in previous years, the GT models starting in 1996 used the more powerful DOHC configuration.
