Where and when was the first steam locomotive invented?

The first steam locomotive generally credited with being successful was built by Richard Trevithick in 1804 in Wales, specifically at the Penydarren ironworks.

While there were earlier attempts at steam-powered locomotives, Trevithick's locomotive was the first to demonstrate practical operation on a railway track, hauling ten wagons and seventy tons of iron over a distance of nine miles.
