Why does your power steering work with engine off?

It's a common misconception that power steering works with the engine off. Power steering systems DO NOT function when the engine is off.

Here's why:

* Hydraulic system: Power steering relies on a hydraulic system. A pump, driven by the engine, pressurizes the fluid. This pressurized fluid helps move the steering wheel and turn the wheels.

* No pump, no power: When the engine is off, the pump isn't running, so there's no pressurized fluid to assist steering.

* Manual steering: Without power steering, you're left with manual steering, which can be much heavier and more difficult, especially at low speeds or when parking.

If you find yourself with power steering that seems to work with the engine off, it could be a sign of a serious problem. The system might be leaking, the pump may be malfunctioning, or there could be another issue. It's important to have a mechanic inspect the system as soon as possible to ensure safe driving.
