The noise is likely caused by one or more of the following:
* Worn lifters: The lifters themselves are worn out and need replacing. Oil is simply a lubricant; it can't fix mechanical wear.
* Lack of oil pressure: Low oil pressure prevents the lifters from being properly lubricated and pressurized, leading to noise. This requires investigation to find the cause of low pressure (e.g., worn pump, clogged oil passages).
* Clogged oil passages: Similar to low pressure, debris in the oil passages can restrict oil flow to the lifters.
* Other internal engine wear: The problem might be something else entirely within the engine (camshaft, etc.)
Switching to synthetic oil might temporarily improve the sound or make it slightly less noticeable, but it won't address the underlying mechanical issue. Ignoring the problem could lead to more extensive and costly engine damage.
You should have a mechanic diagnose the cause of the lifter noise. Simply adding synthetic oil is treating a symptom, not the cause. A proper diagnosis and repair will prevent further damage to your engine.
