Where is the oil sending unit on a 96 ford explorer xlt?

The oil pressure sending unit on a 1996 Ford Explorer XLT is located on the driver's side (left side) of the engine block, near the oil filter. It's a small, usually one-wire, sensor. It might be a little difficult to see without removing some components; you may need to use a wrench to get a good look at it. A shop manual or online diagrams specific to your 4.0L V6 or 5.0L V8 engine (specify which you have!) will give you the most accurate visual location.
