Headers can be tricky to install on some vehicles due to clearance issues.
* Performance Ignition System: A performance ignition system (e.g., upgraded ignition coil, wires, and possibly a distributor upgrade if applicable) can improve the spark, leading to better combustion and a small horsepower bump.
Stage 2: Moderate Upgrades (More Involved & Potentially Costlier)
* Performance Cam Shaft: A camshaft with more aggressive lift and duration will improve airflow and increase horsepower, but this requires more mechanical skill and often involves other related upgrades (springs, pushrods, lifters, etc.) to be done correctly. This is not a beginner's project.
* Performance Valve Train Components: As mentioned above, if you're upgrading the cam, you'll likely need upgraded valve springs, pushrods, and possibly lifters to handle the increased stress.
* Carburetor Upgrade (if applicable): If your 305 is carbureted, a performance carburetor can significantly increase airflow and power. This is an alternative to fuel injection upgrades (below).
* Tuner Chip/ECM Programming (for TBI/Fuel Injected versions): A custom tune from a reputable tuner can significantly improve performance by optimizing fuel delivery and ignition timing for your specific modifications. This is an effective way to maximize the benefits of other upgrades.
Stage 3: Advanced Upgrades (Significant Cost & Mechanical Expertise Required)
* Port and Polish Cylinder Heads: This involves machining the cylinder heads to improve airflow. This is a specialized job best left to professional engine builders.
* High-Performance Cylinder Heads: Replacing the stock cylinder heads with aftermarket performance heads significantly increases airflow and power. This is a substantial undertaking.
* Forced Induction (Turbocharger or Supercharger): Adding forced induction is the most significant way to increase horsepower but it's expensive, complex, and requires extensive modifications to the engine and supporting systems (fuel system, cooling system, etc.). This is not for beginners.
* Engine Rebuild/Stroker Kit: A complete engine rebuild with performance parts, or a stroker kit to increase engine displacement, yields substantial power gains but requires significant expertise and investment.
Important Considerations:
* Transmission: Your transmission may not be able to handle the increased horsepower. Upgrading the transmission might be necessary if you make significant power gains.
* Cooling System: Increased horsepower generates more heat. You may need to upgrade your radiator, fan, and cooling system to prevent overheating.
* Rear Axle: A stronger rear axle might be needed to handle increased torque.
* Professional Help: For anything beyond Stage 1, consider seeking the help of a qualified mechanic or engine builder. Improper modifications can damage your engine.
Before starting any modifications, research your specific 305 engine (TBI, carbureted, etc.) to ensure compatibility with the upgrades.
