You'll need to visually inspect the intake manifold. Look for a sensor with one or two wires connected to it, located in a relatively accessible area near the coolant passages. It's often a one-wire sensor for the gauge and a separate two-wire sensor for the computer (if your model has two).
To help you locate it more easily:
* Consult a repair manual: A Chilton's or Haynes repair manual specific to your 1985 Chevy Celebrity 2.8L V6 will have diagrams showing the exact location of the coolant temperature sensor. This is the most reliable method.
* Use a parts diagram: Online auto parts stores (like AutoZone, Advance Auto Parts, etc.) often have online parts diagrams. Enter your vehicle's year, make, model, and engine, and find the diagram for your engine. The CTS should be clearly identified.
Remember to be careful when working around hot coolant. Allow the engine to cool completely before attempting any work.
