What is the role of an engine oil pan?

The engine oil pan serves two primary roles:

1. Reservoir for engine oil: It holds the majority of the engine's lubricating oil when the engine is not running. This ensures there's always enough oil readily available to the pump when the engine starts.

2. Sumps the oil: Gravity causes the oil to drain back into the pan after circulating through the engine. This allows for efficient oil collection and reuse.
