If the RPM gauge working but car runs fine is there a problem?

A working RPM gauge doesn't necessarily mean there's *no* problem, but it does suggest the engine's basic rotational speed sensing system is functioning. The problem could be elsewhere. The RPM gauge only shows the engine speed; it doesn't diagnose the overall health of the engine or other systems.

A car can run fine even with problems that wouldn't show up on the RPM gauge. Examples include:

* Transmission issues: Problems with the transmission (clutch, gears, etc.) would not be reflected in the RPM.

* Fuel system problems: A partially clogged fuel filter might cause poor performance, but the engine would still spin.

* Ignition system issues: Intermittent misfires might cause rough running or reduced power, but the RPM gauge might still display a normal reading.

* Exhaust system issues: A leak or blockage in the exhaust wouldn't affect the engine speed displayed on the RPM gauge.

* Sensor problems (other than the RPM sensor): Many other sensors (oxygen sensor, mass airflow sensor, etc.) can cause issues without directly impacting the engine speed.

In short: a working RPM gauge is good news, but don't assume everything is perfect. If you notice any unusual sounds, smells, performance issues (reduced power, rough idle, etc.), it's still best to have your car inspected by a mechanic.
