Make sure the engine is cold.
- Remove the air filter cover and air filter.
- Locate the injection pump. It's the large, cylindrical metal item on the left side of the engine.
- Find the timing mark on the injection pump. It's usually a small notch or dot on the side of the pump.
- Find the timing mark on the engine. It's usually a small notch or dot on the flywheel or timing cover.
- The timing is correct if the two marks are aligned with each other. If not, you need to advance the timing.
- Loosen the injection pump mounting bolts.
- Use a wrench to turn the injection pump clockwise until the timing marks align.
- Retighten the injection pump mounting bolts.
- Install the air filter and air filter cover.
