Step 1: Prepare the Vehicle
- Turn off the engine and let it cool.
- Set the parking brake.
- If the vehicle is equipped with a fuel line quick disconnect, disconnect it from the fuel tank. Otherwise, unscrew the fuel line from the fuel tank.
- Disconnect the negative terminal on the battery.
Step 2: Access the fuel sending unit
- Locate the access hole for the fuel sending unit. This hole is usually located in the floorboard of the vehicle behind the front seats.
- Remove the access cover and gasket.
Step 3: Remove the old fuel sending unit
- Use the screwdriver to remove the hold-down screws for the fuel sending unit.
- Disconnect the wires and fuel lines from the unit.
- Use a pry bar to pry the unit out of the fuel tank.
- Remove the old fuel filter from the old sending unit.
Step 4: Install the new fuel-sending unit
- Clean the fuel tank.
- Install the new fuel filter on the new sending unit.
- Insert the new fuel sending unit into the fuel tank.
- Secure it in place with the hold-down screws.
- Reconnect the wires and fuel lines.
Step 5: Test the new fuel sending unit
- Connect the negative terminal on the battery.
- Turn on the ignition and check the fuel gauge. The fuel gauge should show full if the new fuel-sending unit is installed correctly.
- If the fuel gauge does not register, check the wiring and connections.
Step 6: Clean the Fuel Injection System
- Use Fuel Injection Cleaner to clean the fuel injection system. This will help prevent the new sending unit from becoming clogged with debris.
