Tools and Materials Needed:
- Replacement fuel pump
- Fuel filter (optional)
- Safety glasses
- Wrench
- Flat-head screwdriver
- New fuel line connector (if needed)
Step 1: Prepare the vehicle
- Park your Tercel on a level surface, apply the parking brake, and turn off the engine.
- Locate the fuel pump access panel under the rear seat or in the trunk (depending on your Tercel's model).
Step 2: Disconnect the battery
- Open the hood and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical sparks during fuel pump removal.
Step 3: Remove the access panel
- Locate and remove the screws or bolts holding the access panel in place. You might also need a flat-head screwdriver to pry open any plastic clips.
Step 4: Disconnect fuel lines
- Identify and disconnect the fuel lines connected to the fuel pump. Use a wrench to loosen the fuel line nuts or quick-connect fittings. Be cautious, as residual fuel may spill.
Step 5: Disconnect fuel sender
- Locate the fuel sender unit, usually attached to the top of the fuel pump. Disconnect the electrical connector that goes to the fuel sender.
Step 6: Remove the fuel pump assembly
- Remove the bolts or screws securing the fuel pump to the fuel tank. You might need to remove the fuel pump mounting bracket as well.
- Carefully pull out the fuel pump assembly, including the fuel pump, fuel sender unit, and float. Note the orientation of the pump for reinstallation.
Step 7: Replace the fuel filter
- This is an optional step if you want to replace the fuel filter at the same time. Disconnect the fuel lines and remove the old filter. Install a new fuel filter if applicable.
Step 8: Install the new fuel pump assembly
- Insert the new fuel pump assembly into the fuel tank, ensuring it's seated correctly.
- Reattach the fuel pump mounting bracket and tighten the bolts or screws.
- Connect the fuel lines and fuel sender electrical connector.
Step 9: Reconnect the battery
- Reattach the negative battery terminal to the battery.
Step 10: Close the access panel
- Securely replace the fuel pump access panel and tighten the screws or bolts.
Step 11: Start the engine
- Turn the ignition key to start the engine and check for any leaks or abnormal sounds.
