Tools and Supplies Needed:
- Jack and jack stands
- Lug wrench
- Socket wrench set
- Metric wrenches
- Pliers
- Brake caliper grease
- New brake rotors, calipers, pads, and mounting hardware
Procedure:
Step 1: Prepare the Vehicle:
- Park the Monte Carlo on a level surface and apply the parking brake.
- Loosen the lug nuts on the rear wheels but don't remove them completely.
Step 2: Elevate the Vehicle:
- Use a jack to raise one of the rear sides of the vehicle.
- Place a jack stand under the vehicle's frame for safety.
Step 3: Remove the Wheel and Drum Brake Assembly:
- Remove the lug nuts and take off the wheel.
- Locate the drum brake assembly attached to the wheel hub.
Step 4: Disassemble the Drum Brake Components:
- Remove the brake line from the wheel cylinder by unscrewing the brake line fitting.
- Disconnect the parking brake cable from the drum brake lever.
- Remove the wheel cylinder mounting bolts and remove the wheel cylinder.
- Remove the brake shoes and springs.
Step 5: Clean the Mounting Surface:
- Thoroughly clean the wheel hub and mounting surface where the brake rotor will be installed.
Step 6: Install the Brake Rotor:
- Place the new brake rotor onto the wheel hub, ensuring it sits flush against the mounting surface.
- Secure the rotor using the provided mounting screws or bolts.
Step 7: Install the Brake Caliper Bracket:
- Mount the brake caliper bracket to the wheel hub.
- Ensure that the bracket is properly aligned with the brake rotor.
Step 8: Install the Brake Caliper:
- Slide the brake caliper over the brake rotor and secure it using the provided mounting bolts.
- Make sure the caliper is centered over the rotor.
Step 9: Install the Brake Pads:
- Insert the brake pads into the caliper.
- Make sure that the brake pads are properly seated in their respective holders.
Step 10: Reattach Brake Lines and Parking Brake Cable:
- Reconnect the brake line to the caliper and tighten the fitting.
- Reattach the parking brake cable to the caliper or brake lever.
Step 11: Bleed the Brake System:
- Use a brake bleeder tool to bleed the brake system to remove any trapped air.
- This step ensures proper brake fluid flow and functionality.
Step 12: Reinstall the Wheel:
- Place the wheel back onto the vehicle and secure it with the lug nuts.
- Tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to ensure even distribution of force.
Step 13: Test the Brakes:
- Lower the vehicle and test the brakes by pressing the brake pedal firmly and gradually.
- Ensure the brakes engage smoothly and there are no unusual sounds or vibrations.
Step 14: Repeat the Process on the Other Side:
- Repeat steps 2-13 on the opposite rear wheel to convert the drum brake to a rotor system.
