1. Park the vehicle in a safe location and turn off the engine. Engage the parking brake and chock the wheels to prevent the vehicle from rolling. Open the hood of your vehicle.
2. Locate the starter. The starter is typically located on the driver's side of the engine, near the transmission. It is a cylindrical-shaped component with electrical wires connected to it.
3. Disconnect the battery. Locate the negative battery terminal, which is usually marked with a "-" sign. Use a wrench to loosen the nut that holds the negative battery cable in place and remove the cable from the terminal. Be careful not to touch the battery terminals with your hands or any metal objects.
4. Raise the vehicle. Place a jack under the vehicle's frame and raise it until the front wheels are off the ground. Make sure that the vehicle is stable and will not fall while you are working underneath it.
5. Locate the starter mounting bolts. There are usually two or three bolts that hold the starter in place. Use a socket wrench and extension to loosen and remove these bolts.
6. Remove the starter. Once the mounting bolts are removed, you can remove the starter from the vehicle. Be careful not to drop the starter, as it is a heavy component.
7. Install the new starter. Place the new starter in position and insert the mounting bolts. Tighten the bolts until they are snug.
8. Reconnect the battery. Reattach the negative battery cable to the negative battery terminal and tighten the nut.
9. Lower the vehicle. Lower the vehicle using the jack until it is resting on the ground.
10. Start the vehicle. Turn the key in the ignition to start the vehicle. The new starter should now be functioning properly.
