The crankshaft position sensor is located at the front of the cylinder block, slightly below and off to the right of the distributor cap.
1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal and remove the spark plug wires.
2. Remove the upper timing belt cover.
3. Remove the crankshaft pulley bolt.
4. Use a puller to remove the crankshaft pulley.
5. Remove the crankshaft position sensor mounting bolt.
6. Pull the crankshaft position sensor out of the block.
1999–2006 Volkswagen Golf 2.0L
The crankshaft position sensor is located at the rear of the engine block, near the top of the oil pan.
1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal and remove the serpentine belt.
2. Remove the intake manifold.
3. Remove the water pump.
4. Remove the crankshaft position sensor mounting bolt.
5. Pull the crankshaft position sensor out of the block.
