* #2 Phillips head screwdriver
* 10mm socket
* Rag
* Small flat head screwdriver
Instructions:
1. Open up your hood and disconnect the negative battery cable. This is important to do to prevent any electrical shock or damage to the vehicle.
2. Locate the ignition switch. It is located on the right side of the steering column, near the bottom.
3. If there are any electrical wires connected to the ignition switch, disconnect them. You may want to take a picture or make a note of which wire goes where, this could be helpful when reattaching the wires later.
4. Remove the upper and lower covers.
- For the upper cover, remove the two #2 Phillips head screws located at the top of the steering column cover and lift the cover upwards and off.
- For the lower cover, remove the 10mm nut/screw (located at the bottom of the steering column) using the 10mm socket and push it gently towards the right. You may have to use a small flathead screwdriver to help you dislodge the cover from it's location.
5. Remove the ignition switch. You may have to use a rag or towel here to prevent your tools from scratching the steering column, it is very important to insert your tools into the small hole carefully.
- Look down into the upper steering column and locate the hole under the ignition switch cylinder about halfway down. Insert a small flat head screwdriver into this hole and push upwards (towards the roof of your car), while you push upwards with the screwdriver, pull on the ignition switch, as soon as you feel the cylinder pop out of the hole, let go with the screwdriver and pull out the whole assembly.
6. Install the new ignition switch. It's that easy! Just insert it into the upper steering column and it should snap back in place.
7. Reattach the electrical wires. If you took a picture, use that to help you put the wires back where they belong, don't worry, there is a reason for every single one of those strange colored wires, Volkswagen is very good about color matching when it comes to wiring.
8. Reattach the upper and lower covers.
9. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
10. Start the car and test the ignition switch.
