How do you change the spark plugs on a 1997 Dodge Avenger 2.0 4-cylinder?

Tools Needed:

- Socket wrench

- Spark plug wrench

- Gapping tool

- New spark plugs (NGK ZFR5N or equivalent)

- Dielectric grease

Instructions:

1. Locate the spark plugs. They are located on the top of the cylinder head, just below the ignition coils.

2. Remove the ignition coils. Use a socket wrench to loosen the bolts holding the coils in place, and then pull the coils straight up. Be careful not to damage the spark plug wires.

3. Remove the old spark plugs. Use a spark plug wrench to loosen the spark plugs and then remove them by hand.

4. Inspect the spark plugs. Look for signs of wear, such as erosion, pitting, or fouling. If the spark plugs are damaged, replace them.

5. Set the gap on the new spark plugs. Use a gapping tool to set the gap between the center electrode and the ground electrode to the manufacturer's specifications (typically 0.050-0.054 inches).

6. Apply dielectric grease to the threads of the new spark plugs. This will help prevent the plugs from seizing in the cylinder head.

7. Screw the new spark plugs into the cylinder head. Tighten the plugs by hand until they are snug, and then use a spark plug wrench to tighten them to the manufacturer's specifications (typically 18-22 foot-pounds).

8. Reinstall the ignition coils. Push the coils straight down into the spark plug wells and then tighten the bolts holding them in place.

9. Start the engine and check for any misfires. If the engine is running rough, check the spark plug wires to make sure they are properly connected.
