Locate the solenoid. The solenoid is usually located on the side of the engine near the starter. It is a small, cylindrical device with two wires connected to it.
Disconnect the wires from the solenoid. Be careful not to touch the bare ends of the wires, as they may be live.
Use a multimeter to test the continuity of the solenoid. Set the multimeter to the ohms setting and place one probe on each of the solenoid's terminals. If the solenoid is good, the multimeter will read zero ohms.
If the solenoid is bad, it will not allow current to flow through it. The engine will not start if the solenoid is bad.
To replace the solenoid, simply unscrew the old solenoid and screw in the new one. Be sure to reconnect the wires properly.
Testing the solenoid for continuity is a simple way to determine if it is working properly. If the solenoid is bad, it should be replaced as soon as possible to ensure that the engine will start.
