Here are the instructions on how to change the oil and oil filter on a 1979 Harley Davidson Sportster:
Step 1: Remove the Oil Drain Plug
- Locate the oil drain plug on the bottom of the engine.
- Place an oil drain pan under the plug and use the appropriate wrench to loosen and remove it.
- Allow all the oil to drain completely.
Step 2: Replace the Oil Filter
- Locate the oil filter on the front of the engine.
- Use an oil filter wrench to loosen and remove the old filter.
- Apply a thin coat of new oil to the gasket of the new oil filter.
- Screw on the new filter by hand until it is snug, then use the oil filter wrench to tighten it an additional 1/2 to 3/4 turn.
Step 3: Refill the Oil
- Put the drain plug back in and tighten it securely.
- Locate the oil fill port and remove the cap.
- Using a funnel, pour in the recommended amount of new oil.
- Check the oil level with the dipstick and add more oil if necessary.
Step 4: Start the Engine and Check for Leaks
- Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes.
- Check for leaks around the oil drain plug and oil filter. If there are any leaks, tighten the drain plug or filter until the leaks stop.
