Why would my speedometer for a Volvo 1990 740 GLE wagon not work?

Speedometer Cable Connection

The speedometer cable connects to the back of the speedometer and a sensor on the transmission. Make sure the cable is not loose or disconnected, as that could cause the speedometer not to work.

Speed Sensor Failure

The speed sensor is a device that monitors the vehicle's speed and transmits the information to the speedometer. If the speed sensor fails, the speedometer may not work. If the sensor looks corroded or damaged, replace the sensor.

Transmission Gear Issues

In some cases, the speedometer failure may be due to issues in the speedometer driven gear or driven gear housing located on the transmission. Inspect these components for damage or excessive wear and replace as necessary.

Instrument Cluster Failure

If the speedometer is the only instrument in the instrument cluster that is not working, it could indicate a problem within the instrument cluster itself. This could be a problem with the electrical connection or a failed speedometer unit within the cluster.

Wiring Problems

Electrical issues can also be the culprit behind a faulty speedometer. Check for any loose connections, damaged wiring, or corrosion that may be affecting the flow of information from the speed sensor to the speedometer.
