Why does the engine temperature go down when driving in winter?

This is a common misconception. The engine temperature actually goes up during the cold season.

Here's why: An engine's primary purpose is to convert chemical energy into mechanical energy, which results in heat generation as a by-product. During winters, the ambient temperature is lower, causing denser air to flow into the engine. Denser air contains more oxygen per volume, which facilitates better combustion. As the combustion efficiency improves, more heat is generated, leading to an increased engine temperature.
