Tools and Materials:
* 5mm Allen key
* Flat-head screwdriver
* Phillips-head screwdriver
* Pliers
* Rags
* Funnel
* New fuel pump
* Fuel filter (optional)
Instructions:
1. Disconnect the battery. This is a safety precaution to prevent any sparks from igniting the fuel vapours.
2. Remove the fuel cap. This will relieve the pressure in the fuel tank and make it easier to remove the fuel pump.
3. Locate the fuel pump. The fuel pump is located under the rear seat of the Golf Mk2.
4. Remove the fuel pump cover. There are two 5mm Allen bolts that hold the fuel pump cover in place. Remove these bolts and then lift off the cover.
5. Disconnect the fuel lines. There are two fuel lines that connect to the fuel pump. Use a pair of pliers to squeeze the release clips on the fuel lines and then pull the lines off of the fuel pump.
6. Remove the electrical connector from the fuel pump. There is one electrical connector that connects to the fuel pump. Use a flat-head screwdriver to pry up the locking tab on the connector and then pull the connector off of the fuel pump.
7. Remove the fuel pump mounting screws. There are four Phillips-head screws that hold the fuel pump in place. Remove these screws.
8. Lift out the fuel pump. Once the mounting screws are removed, you should be able to lift the fuel pump out of the tank.
9. Inspect the fuel pump. Check the fuel pump for any damage or wear and tear. If the pump is damaged, it will need to be replaced.
10. Install the new fuel pump. If the pump is not damaged, place the new fuel pump in the tank and secure it with the four Phillips-head screws.
11. Reconnect the electrical connector. Attach the electrical connector to the fuel pump and press the tab until the connector is secure.
12. Reconnect the fuel lines. Push the fuel lines onto the fuel pump and push down on the release clips to secure them in place.
13. Replace the fuel pump cover. Place the fuel pump cover back on the tank and secure it with the two 5mm Allen bolts.
14. Reconnect the battery.
15. Test the fuel pump. Turn on the ignition and listen for the fuel pump to run. If the fuel pump is working properly, it will make a humming noise.
Note: If the fuel pump is not working properly, it will need to be replaced. You can find replacement fuel pumps at most auto parts stores.
