* A flat-head screwdriver
* A Phillips-head screwdriver
* A 10mm socket wrench
* A 13mm socket wrench
Once you have gathered your tools, follow these steps:
1. Locate the idle screw. It is located on the throttle body, just below the throttle cable.
2. Use the flat-head screwdriver to turn the idle screw clockwise or counterclockwise until the desired idle speed is reached.
3. To access the idle speed screw more easily remove the air intake hose.
4. Once you have adjusted the idle speed, use the Phillips-head screwdriver to tighten the lock nut on the idle screw.
5. Replace the air intake hose if removed.
6. Start the engine and check the idle speed. If it is still too high or low, repeat steps 2-5.
Here are some additional tips for changing the tick over on a VW 16V GTI Mk2:
* Make sure that the engine is cold before you begin.
* If you are adjusting the idle speed with the engine running, be careful not to touch the throttle cable or the throttle body.
* If the idle speed is too high, it can cause the engine to stall or run rough.
