- New oil filter (Mann HU 718/20 x 2.5 x H 29 mm)
- New oil drain plug washer (BMW part # 11 13 7 500 232)
- Oil drain pan
- Funnel
- Wrench
- Ratchet
- 5-liter jug of new oil (BMW recommends Castrol Edge 5W-30 LL-01 or equivalent)
Procedure:
1. Park your car on a level surface and turn off the engine. Allow the engine to cool down for a few minutes.
2. Locate the oil drain plug on the bottom of the oil pan. The oil drain plug is typically located near the front of the car, on the driver's side.
3. Place the oil drain pan under the oil drain plug.
4. Use the wrench to loosen the oil drain plug. Be careful not to drop the bolt into the oil pan.
5. Allow the oil to drain completely into the oil drain pan. This may take a few minutes.
6. Once the oil has drained, use the wrench to reinstall the oil drain plug. Tighten the plug until it is snug.
7. Locate the oil filter housing. The oil filter housing is typically located near the top of the engine, near the front of the car.
8. Use the wrench to loosen the oil filter housing cap. Be careful not to spill any oil.
9. Remove the old oil filter from the housing. Be careful not to drop the oil filter into the engine bay.
10. Apply a thin coat of new oil to the gasket of the new oil filter.
11. Screw the new oil filter into the housing until it is snug.
12. Use the funnel to add new oil to the engine. Add 6.5 liters of oil.
13. Check the oil level using the dipstick. The oil level should be between the "MIN" and "MAX" marks on the dipstick.
14. Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes.
15. Check the oil level again using the dipstick. The oil level should be between the "MIN" and "MAX" marks on the dipstick.
