What is a Gladhand in air brake system?

In an air brake systems, Gladhand is a connector that permits the flow of air from the air reservoir of a tractor to air braked trailers with a matching fitting. There are two types of Gladhand that are commonly used:

1. Service Gladhand: Also known as the "supply" or "delivering" Gladhand, connects the tractor's air supply line to the trailer's air supply inlet or Gladhand. Its primary function is to deliver compressed air from the tractor's air reservoir to the trailer's air reservoirs, maintaining the required air pressure for the trailer's brakes to operate.

2. Emergency Gladhand: Sometimes referred to as the "control" Gladhand, connects the tractor's emergency brake line to the trailer's emergency brake inlet. This type of Gladhand facilitates the transfer of emergency air signals between the tractor and trailer. In case of an emergency brake application or loss of air pressure, the emergency Gladhand allows the tractor's emergency braking signal to actuate the trailer's emergency brakes.

Gladhand connection are designed to allow easy connection and disconnection of air lines between tractors and trailers, ensuring proper air supply and the operation of trailer brakes. They play a crucial role in maintaining the safety and integrity of air brake systems on commercial vehicles.
