1. Locate the harmonic balancer on the front of the engine. It is a large, circular metal disc with a series of marks around the edge.
2. Find the timing mark on the harmonic balancer. It is usually a small notch or line.
3. Locate the timing pointer on the engine block. It is a small metal tab that is located near the harmonic balancer.
4. Align the timing mark on the harmonic balancer with the timing pointer.
5. Loosen the distributor hold-down bolt.
6. Turn the distributor clockwise or counterclockwise until the engine starts to run smoothly.
7. Tighten the distributor hold-down bolt.
8. Recheck the timing to ensure that it is still correct.
