How do you build a 358 Chevy engine?

Step 1: Disassemble the engine.

Remove the cylinder heads, intake and exhaust manifolds, water pump, oil pan, and timing chain cover.

Step 2: Inspect the engine block and components.

Look for any cracks, damage, or excessive wear. Replace any damaged or worn parts.

Step 3: Bore and hone the cylinders.

This will ensure that the new pistons will fit properly and will create a smooth surface for the piston rings to seal against.

Step 4: Install the new pistons and piston rings.

Be sure to use the correct size and type of piston rings for your engine.

Step 5: Assemble the cylinder heads.

Install the new valves, springs, and retainers. Be sure to use the correct torque specifications when tightening the cylinder head bolts.

Step 6: Install the intake and exhaust manifolds.

Use new gaskets and bolts when installing the intake and exhaust manifolds.

Step 7: Install the water pump.

Use a new gasket and sealant when installing the water pump.

Step 8: Install the oil pan.

Use a new gasket and sealant when installing the oil pan.

Step 9: Install the timing chain cover.

Use a new gasket and sealant when installing the timing chain cover.

Step 10: Install the timing chain and gears.

Be sure to align the timing marks correctly when installing the timing chain and gears.

Step 11: Fill the engine with oil and coolant.

Add the correct amount of oil and coolant to the engine.

Step 12: Start the engine and check for leaks.

Run the engine for a few minutes and check for any leaks. If you find any leaks, tighten the bolts or replace the gaskets as needed.

Step 13: Tune the engine.

Use a timing light and tachometer to tune the engine. Set the ignition timing and idle speed according to the specifications in your engine manual.

Step 14: Break in the engine.

Drive the engine for the first 500 miles or so at varying speeds and loads. This will help to seat the piston rings and prevent any damage to the engine.

Step 15: Enjoy your newly rebuilt 358 Chevy engine!
