Changing the Starter on a 2002 Jeep Liberty 3.7 Liter

Parts:

* New starter (OEM or aftermarket)

* Starter mounting bolts (8)

* Thread sealant

* Cleaning supplies (rags, degreaser, compressed air)

* Safety equipment (safety glasses, gloves, etc.)

Tools:

* Socket wrench set

* Wrench

* Hammer

* Jack and jack stands

* Extension cord

Instructions:

1. Follow your vehicle's owner's manual to disconnect the battery.

2. Raise the front of the vehicle with a jack, and secure the vehicle with jack stands.

3. Locate the starter on the passenger side of the engine, below the intake manifold. It is connected to the engine by three mounting bolts.

4. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the starter. There are two connectors: one for the positive battery terminal and one for the solenoid. Use a wrench to loosen the nuts holding the connectors in place, then pull the connectors off.

5. Loosen the starter mounting bolts with a socket wrench. Do not remove the bolts yet.

6. Support the starter with a jack or block of wood. This will prevent it from falling when you remove the mounting bolts.

7. Remove the mounting bolts and lift the starter out of the vehicle.

8. Clean the starter mounting surface on the engine block with degreaser and a rag.

9. Apply thread sealant to the threads of the new starter mounting bolts.

10. Install the new starter in the reverse order of removal.

11. Connect the electrical connectors to the starter.

12. Lower the vehicle with the jack and jack stands.

13. Reconnect the battery.

Tips:

* Changing a starter can be a difficult and time-consuming job. If you are not comfortable working on vehicles, it is best to take it to a qualified mechanic.

* Make sure that you have disconnected the battery before starting work.

* Use thread sealant to the starter mounting bolts to prevent them from coming loose.

* You may need to use a breaker bar to loosen the starter mounting bolts.
