Disconnect the battery. This will help to prevent any sparks or electrical shock while you are working on the engine.
Step 2: - Drain coolant and oil
- Drain the engine oil and coolant. This can be done by removing the oil drain plug and the coolant drain plug. Allow all of the fluid to drain completely.
- Remove the air filter assembly and disconnect the throttle cable.
Step 3: - Remove accessories and hoses
- Remove the various accessories that are attached to the engine, such as the alternator, power steering pump, and air conditioning compressor.
- Disconnect the hoses that are attached to the engine, such as the radiator hoses and the fuel lines.
Step 4: - Disconnect wiring
Disconnect the wiring that is attached to the engine, such as the spark plug wires and the oxygen sensor wires.
Step 5: - Remove transmission and transfer case
- Disconnect the transmission mount and remove all the transmission and transfer case bolts.
- Lower the transmission and transfer case together using an engine hoist.
Step 6: - Jack up the front of the car.
- Securely support the car, lift the front of the vehicle, and securely support it with jack stands.
Step 7: - Drain the engine oil and coolant.
- Open the oil drain plug and oil filter cap to allow the oil to drain into an oil drain pan.
- Disconnect the radiator drain plug or open the radiator drain valve to allow the coolant to drain into a drain pan.
Step 8: - Remove the starter.
- Disconnect the wiring harness from the starter.
- Remove the bolts that attach the starter to the engine and transmission bell housing.
- Lift the starter off the engine and transmission.
Step 9: - Disconnect the exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifold.
- Locate the bolts or nuts that connect the exhaust pipe to the exhaust manifold.
- Use a wrench to loosen and remove the bolts or nuts.
- Carefully separate the exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifold.
Step 10: - Disconnect the fuel line and fuel filter.
- Locate the fuel line that connects to the fuel filter.
- Use a wrench to loosen and remove the fuel line fitting from the fuel filter.
- Disconnect the fuel filter from the fuel line.
Step 11: - Disconnect the transmission cooler lines, brake lines, and clutch cable (manual transmission only).
- Locate the transmission cooler lines, brake lines, and clutch cable (manual transmission only).
- Disconnect the transmission cooler lines, brake lines, and clutch cable (manual transmission only).
Step 12: - Remove the accessory belt.
- Locate the accessory belt that drives the alternator, water pump, and power steering pump.
- Use a wrench to loosen the tensioner pulley bolt and remove the accessory belt.
Step 13: - Remove the spark plugs.
- Use a spark plug socket and ratchet to remove the spark plugs from the engine.
Step 14: - Remove the upper and lower intake manifolds.
- Disconnect the electrical connectors and vacuum lines from the upper intake manifold.
- Remove the bolts that attach the upper intake manifold to the engine.
- Lift the upper intake manifold off the engine.
- Disconnect the electrical connectors and vacuum lines from the lower intake manifold.
- Remove the bolts that attach the lower intake manifold to the engine.
- Lift the lower intake manifold off the engine.
- Remove the oil filter.
Step 15: - Lift and support the engine.
- Use an engine hoist or support to carefully lift the engine and support it securely.
Step 16: - Remove the engine mount bolts.
- Locate the engine mount bolts on the left and right sides of the engine.
- Remove the engine mount bolts.
Step 17: - Remove the engine from the car.
- Carefully lower the engine from the car.
- Guide the engine out of the engine compartment.
Step 18: - Installation is the reverse of removal.
